As a former chain-smoker, I agree. Moreover, you can take out and light a cigarette nearly automatically, without even thinking about it -- sort of like the way you keep your car going in a straight line -- so there's no mental split like there is when talking on a cellphone.
So are a lot of people, including at least one ophthalmologist of my acquaintance. However, the lenses can't get lost and unless you're really a klutz you never touch your eyeball with anything that isn't soft and wet, so such fear is clearly irrational (which, of course, makes it no less real). If the convenience of contacts seems of value, you might at least give them a try. The additional cost of a contact exam (perhaps 50% more than a spectacle exam) and the loss of your time are the only risk. If you have astigmatism it's harder to fit, but still possible.

When the kids were tiny I could mix up a bottle containing water and nonfat dry milk (and occasional Ovaltine powder) while driving. And smoking. I guess some guys just aren't good at multi-tasking.
