There are several subjects here. There are questions of ethnicity versus nationality versus heritage. There are also simple locational definitions and the level of depth thereof. IF, and it's a pretty...

Hmmmm, I certainly realise the congestion I create driving at 55-60 mph - absolutely none. I`m driving either when early or late when there are very few other cars on the roads (most of which are cloc`s), or in the middle of the day when I`ll stick in lane 1 keeping up with a LGV, in which case I`m causing no more congestion than the LGV alone would do. I save some money, I save fuel and I reduce the chance of being involved in an RTC, since the vast majority are caused by idiots driving too fast, too close and not paying any attention to the road around them.

See the above - you are quite simply wrong. Someone who sits in lane 2 or 3 at 50mph is in the wrong, absolutely, but driving at 50 (you keep going back to 50mph to make an arguement to criticise my driving, but I have said that I drive at 55-60, perhaps you`re trying to justify a slightly irrational point here?) in lane 1 - big deal. The police (for example) tend to patrol at this kind of speed, as it allows other vehicles to pbutt them quite freely.

No. I like my car, I love my job, and I do not get to charge expenses to my employer. You`re quite welcome to not like my chosen method of driving, but since the only time it might conceivably hold you up is approaching a junction and you want to travel faster than me in lane 1, tough poo.

Where did I say that? I suggested that if the government does bring in a charging system based on the time and type of roads driven on, why not extend it further. Remove tax from fuel, and replace it with a tax based on time and type of road driven on, as well as speed. Use the money to fund carbon sinks and other environmental schemes to reduce the environmental impact of cars. And since you can measure both position and speed, then allow those people who choose to drive in a more fuel-hungry way to pay for the additional damage caused to the environment.

In fact, my suggestion specifically mentions 80mph as a good point at which to start charging more money to repair the damage done to the environment. It gives people the option to choose how they want to drive, and to pay according to the damage caused by their actions.

Adrian I saw a brilliant (but terrifying clip) on one of those police camera action style shows. A police car en-route to an RTC is trying...
