Driver Discovers Deadly Crash Moments After Letting Teens' Car Pbutt Him
POSTED: 11:12 p.m. EST November 24, 2005 Burke County, NC -- A driver said he pulled off the road to let a car full of teenagers pbutt him, then moments later drove up on the scene where the teens had slammed into a tree near Valdese.
The crash end 16-year-old Courtney Stamey, the daughter of a Valdese police officer and 18-year-old Joseph Smith, the son of a state trooper.
Smith was driving the car when it ran off Milton Road in Burke County.
Two other pbuttengers, ages 13 and 14, were seriously injured.
Investigators were back at the scene Thursday afternoon taking measurements on the road.
One trooper said Thursday that the car had been driving erratically on I-40 before the crash.
One driver said he pulled into a church parking lot to let the teens pbutt him after they flashed their headlights at his car.
He later drove up on the deadly accident scene.
A state trooper said that speed was a factor.
