It's always funny how the same lefties who decry "too low" or even "artificially low" sic fuel prices are the first to howl and want "fair" price controls when a chance to see their wish come true occurs.

I'm surprised the extremists haven't demanded the state take over the refining and selling of fuels in Hawaii (or in other Cyanide Nation localities).

Haven't they learned anything?

Gov. Linda Lingle said Thursday that she would suspend the gas price cap law due to go into effect next week if either or both of the state's two oil refineries said they would close.

Lingle said she would also halt the law if the state noticed wholesale or retail gas shortages stemming from curtailed shipments to any of the eight regional zones outlined in the law.

Hawaii Puts Cap on Gas Prices; Would it Work in Indiana?

Some Hoosiers want to see that kind of relief. But is a gas cap possible in Indiana? Experts say it's not practical.

While it may be tempting to put the cap on rising gas prices, experts call it a short term fix, and a long term disaster.

But the experiment is drawing attention from the mainland.

Ever since retail price limits during the 1970s led to gas lines nationwide, many politicians and consumer advocates have been leery of caps. But they don't dismiss the idea, either. Many believe that if it works in Hawaii, maybe it would work elsewhere.

"Price caps are not a solution to a dysfunctional market. However, they are a damage control measure until solutions are developed," said California state Sen. Joseph Dunn, D-Garden Grove (Orange County), who has called for state regulation of the gasoline market. "If they're necessary to prevent the bleeding of consumers, then I would support price caps as a temporary measure while we develop real solutions."

When, pray tell, have price caps worked on anything for any but the very shortest time period?
