The problem is the sources of funds are so mixed up and well-laundered it's difficult if not impossible to accurately compare the TRUE costs of the various modes.
It has other benefits, as well: each and every one of those train riders represents one less car on the freeways.
Fine by me. Rail is best at the regional level; about the longest I ever want to spend on a train is 10 hours or so. Trains are great for commuting to work, and in some cases over mnoderate distances they are faster overall than flying and WAY less aggravating than driving. Long distance routes can go th way of the Dodo bird as far as I'm concerned.
