Scott en Aztl‡n Interesting that you retained several layers of posts above, but you deleted the cite that you asked for, and I provided. Hmmm...

Bingo! I can agree with statement. I'd probably say, that people who are not willing to make changes in response to rising gas prices should stop whining.

It makes no sense for me to move closer to work. My job location is in a research park 13 miles out of town. There are apartments in the area, but none close enough to walk to work (buttuming there were actually suitable walkways, which there are not). Besides, if you live out there, you'd still need a car to drive everywhere else. In a prior buttignment, I was fortunate enough to be able to walk to work for a couple of years and it was great. But those days are gone. However, just because I am auto-dependent, doesn't mean I can't try to cut down on my need for petroleum. My goal for the year is to reduce fuel consumption by 10%. I am doing this by driving my most fuel efficient vehicle whenever possible, cutting out unnecessary trips, combining trips, and walking to the store when practical. I also have tried to shift my commuting to a time when the roads are less congested and to tele-commute one day a week (my company allows this). I firmly believe if a large percentage of drivers would reduce their fuel consumption by just 10%, gas prices would drop sharply. However, it seems few people are willing to doing anything more than gripe. I know one young girl who drives everywhere by herself. She and group of 5 friends recently drove 45 miles to a lake in the area. They took three cars. They all wanted to be able to leave whenever. Made no sense.
