Yeah, that makes it pile up, don't it? Thats the situation with my servicing 2-way radios. Some of that mileage was in the worst conditions - it'd start snowing, and that's when the XYZ police department would remember the radios that weren't working and call for service.
Its hard to imagine only doing 10K. Its 17 miles to work and 17 back, and 48 weeks of that a year is 8,160 miles. Then, the health club and movies are across the street from each other and 20 miles from here - I do the health club about 4 times a week, and the movies 2 - 3, so I get there about 5 - 6 days a week, 52 weeks a year, for 10,400 - 12,480 miles a year. Then there's usually 4 or 5 trips to things that are 600 or more miles away, and maybe 10 trips where I fly somewhere and the airports are mostly 90 miles away.
When I retire I'm going to move somewhere that I can walk to the movies and the health club, and the airport is only 15 or so miles away...

Sounds like just bad luck. I haven't had that sort of bad luck. I've not been in anything big enough to be reportable.
I've always been able to avoid this situation, or swerve or brake effectively. Close as I've come lately was about 4 years ago when traffic stopped suddenly on the way into BWI airport. I hit the brakes, saw it wasn't going to work, let up on 'em and just drove around the traffic. The left lane was empty. I've always been able to do that, and have a hard time imagining that I need anything fancy like anti-lock brakes (that car didn't have 'em) in order to keep doing it.
