Here's a real-life situation that happened to me two weeks ago. I was driving along a fairly busy four-lane carrigeway (two-lanes in each direction) that has a 30MPH limit, keeping to the same speed as the general flow of traffic. Progress was stop-start between the frequent traffic lights (it was a city centre). My attention was concerned mainly with the other traffic and the pedestrians, and I admit not concentrating on my speedometer. Other vehicles were in the lane next to me in a fairly continuous stream, and there was also a stream of oncoming traffic. Suddenly the gatso I had just pbutted flashed. I glanced at my speedo, and saw that it was reading just under 35MPH. I know by GPS that when the speedo in that car reads 35, I am actually doing between 31MPH and 32MPH.
No NIP has yet arrived - but maybe I'll get one next week. If so, and if the speed it shows is not way above 30MPH, do I accept it and pay up, or do I ask for the evidence - which may well show that the gatso was triggered by the vehicle next to me or by a reflection from the oncoming stream, but may equally well show that I was driving slightly more than 30MPH and so have been rightly fined.
The problem is of course that if the latter proves to be the case, I'll end up being penalised for my audacity in questioning the accuracy of the allegation.
