buttuming a Camille-type hurricane with wind gusts to 200 mph, mbuttive storm surges, and being below sea level, it would be foolish to stay put, even if you were high up in an extremely sturdy concrete and iron building -- that would likely just end up being an island. Electric power and potable water will be gone for some unknown period of time afterwards.
And actually, I am so not down with them using the Superdome for shelter -- they never completed studies how of well that would hold up in a Cat 4 or 5 storm and it's a 30 yr old structure. There's going to be all sorts of tricky aerodynamics going on around it, so.... Just hope for the best in any case.
In any case, when you bug out of town, head West to be on the weaker side of the storm, bring clothing and food for a rainy weekend outdoors, but focus more on bringing along as much clean water as you can. Don't bother with gas if you have 1-2 tank or better -- most of the gas lines are caused by greedy idiots topping off. Once you get 100 miles or so away, you'll be back in civilization, or whatever pbuttes for it in Bush country (sorry -- I had to get that one in.) Your ATM card will work and you'll be able to get bacon and eggs at a diner, and coffee and donuts at a Dunkin' or a Krispy Kreme.
