Hurricane Katrina Comments and Questions 2273

They said could. It is only hindsight that changes this word to would.

No, they did not. There is this problem of officials crying wolf. It happened in Florida not too long ago. A governor or mayor edicts an evacuation three days ahead of time. The hurricane takes a left turn and everybody who moved out gets as peeed as you are now, but for the opposite reason. The next time an evacuation is called, nobody listens and they get slammed. Now these same people get peeed off because nobody made them leave. That is human nature. Bottom line is nobody had enough warning to move a couple million people over two roads to a "safe" place. With a hurricane, there is no safe place other than on the other side of the mountains. Even on the other side of the mountains, you have the risk of tornadoes from the hurricane. If there are tornadoes, all the people you have moved are now in that wind path with no protection.

No,no. You are not answering the question. Be specific. Where are you going to put the 40,000 people who do not move out of New Orleans? Remember, this is before the storm hits. I'd also like some details about how you force those tourists, who would not leave, to leave?

Gunner Here's a "plan" from June of last year: Here was a test of it just a couple of months later when Hurricane Ivan threatened: Sound familiar? And...

That wasn't nonsense. Just because there was a slow evacuation does not imply that the evacuation failed. Just because those people on the road could not travel as the high speeds they wanted to does not imply a failure. Those who chose to move out got out in time.

You appear to have a reading problem. Nobody knows without a test. Even if they could have conducted a test with a successful outcome, there is still no guarantee that no damage will be done. The structure is still there and pretty much intact considering the wind.

Let me tell you a fact of life. There is no structure that is safe from a hurricane other than a cave at high elevation. This cave isn't "safe" because there be earthquakes.

You sure are obsessed with a roof. I don't know of any roof that is 100% hurricane-proof. There isn't any that is tornado proof and a hurricane is an 8-hour long slower tornado with a broader beam.

I'm talking about planning, and good planning accounts for things like this. So you're saying there was this primary plan of using trains, planes, and automobiles, but that failed, as...

And that is exacly what they did. It was a last resort.

How would you test it?

What failures were there with Ivan?

None of your posting is about the human factor. AAMOF, your posting is an example of the human factor that made any successful evacuation impossible.

I'm in the northeast. We have experience with a few hurricanes (and we are so due for one). We have extensive experience with blizzards. One would think that, if there is a nor'easter, people would stay at home. Nope. Never. Even the lessons learned from last week's storm are forgotten.

Yup because you think it's a function of the Federal government. It is not. Is a function of the State and city governments.
