IBM to build nationwide speedtrap

were saying :

Oh, it certianly technically CAN be done... I don't think anybody's claimed it can't.

Just not on an economically viable scale for 25 million cars or at all using solely (or even largely) GPS or RFID as proposed by some round here.

From that article on the IBM project :- "at least 100,000 PDA-like units, which will be installed within automobile carriages, Ziter says. The telematics device will use multiple microprocessors based on IBM's Power Architecture, and will have the capability to monitor the speed of the vehicle and send out a warning if the car surpbuttes the posted speed limit. IBM engineers will design the infrastructure for the traffic-tracking system. Wireless access points, which will monitor the devices, will be installed on street lights and other places along the roadway."

So...

Regular transmitters along every road. Multi-processor PDAs fitted in cars. GSM-GPRS communications in the PDAs.

In a country where "100% growth in the road network" is "well over 500km"

Fuel Duty 5418
Matt B and And as because those would then one is tankful extraction, etc. hefty chunk. rate...

And EVEN ON THAT TINY SCALE it's costing $125million.

I think that'll probably be proving those of us who claim it just plain isn't feasible absolutely right, don't you?

Your apologies will be gratefully accepted, when offered.
