If I Insure Online Am I Covered Immediately

bucket

They all have to go through a thing called the Motor Insurers Database now (google for MiD) and there are all sorts of legislative rules about how quickly things have to go on there - istr that it's within 24 hrs, no matter where you buy your insurance.

Most companies, brokers included, input the details onto a centralised database which updates the MiD pretty much instantly - the fines for not doing it are huge.

This is what the plod access when they check your details - it can report back pretty much instantly what the right answer is - and if you're carrying a printout of the confirmaiton screen, then, in the unlikely event that it's not got into the MiD, a 7 day wonder should suffice - and if you get one, a quick call to the insurer to explain the predicament should get a cover note in the post PDFQ.

Conor The hours you listed still worry me. I've done my share of shift working, long drives etc. I know I wouldn't be...

As an aside, if you're buying through a broker, you should have a cover note before you leave the office - they are supposed to supply you with one, so there shouldn't be an issue there.

Spooks (who didn't used to work for a big insurer, honest!)
