BUT. If you're stationary at a red light, in a clearly marked, separated right turn only lane, what information is keeping your indicator flashing going to convey? That your intention is to turn right when the lights change? What else are you going to do, make camp for the night? If you turn the indicator off while you wait, then indicate when you are about to move, actually about to turn right, you have a chance of communicating some useful information which would be impossible if you sat there flashing away for nothing.
It's like joining a motorway - if you start indicating right as soon as you enter the slip road, you tell no-one anything they didn't know already. You intend to join the motorway. Big deal - why else are you on the slip road? The time to indicate is when it conveys some information, when you have identified a gap, matched speed and intend to cross the line on to the motorway - *then* the signal conveys some useful information. --
