other their From the highway code. 157: When turning at a cross roads where an oncoming vehicle is also turning right, there is a choice of two methods Turn right side to right...

Waiting behind an Astra indicating right, the lights go amber, I knock on my right indicator, lights go green. First car pulls away and as the Astra moves forward I move right and position myself in the middle of the road. This position allows cars behind to pbutt on my left and oncoming traffic to also pbutt and thus not hold anyone up. Unfortunately the Astra only left about 3 feet of road to his left and this meant that all the traffic behind just clambered on the pavement, every single one, from tranny vans to old bangers, everyone. I've seen this practice done few times now and a similiar thing happens on the opposite side and the other two roads. Car wants to turn right, but doesn't position properly and traffic has clamber onto the pavement to get past.

Things really get interesting when two cars, from opposing sides, want to turn right. The 'no-mans' land space is so small, you can't actually face each other and turn, if you set off at the same time, you'd have to make sure you deliberately cut the corner to avoid a collision.

Worst still what aggreviates alot of people into doing these dangerous things is the shoddy time settings of the lights and the fact that if someone positions themselves poorly like the Astra did and the person behind doesn't want to clamber onto the pavement, the line behind just gets huge. I'm not saying you should clamber on the pavement, just giving you the facts.

As I said, if the signage isn't clear, then it is worth indicating - if you're the...

I've actually lost count the number of times I've seen people go through red lights, just as the other set is changing from Red-Amber to green.

I've also seen plenty of accidents-near-miss on these cross roads and regulary see chards of indicator casing and other material.

The main problem is that its a very tight junction, and really ought to be widened and there is plenty of pavement to eat into without compromising peds needs, I'm suprised the council haven't done anything about it as they've quite happily plainted those cycle zones which really do *help* safety (not).
