Italy

Watch out for the excess, which can be MbuttIVE in Italy (I have seen 600 euro quoted!). Personally I would recommend booking in advance through Holiday Autos, as they have their own independent insurance for excess buyback for about £5-day. Go with them and they will settle any unexpected insurance invoices received after your return. I managed to crunch a wing on a campsite which was billed to the credit card about 2 months later, one call to Holiday Autos and they settled that amount within a week.

Our most recent driving has been in the south (Naples area, Puglia and Sicily). We find Italian drivers are buttertive and expect you to be buttertive too. Unlike many English drivers, they don't mind giving way to you, and will 'expect' that others will give way to them. There seems to be an understanding that roads are there to be shared, so a bit of give-and-take is buttumed.

In urban areas you will need to be particularly aware of where other road users are; especially moped users, often you'll find them sitting on your left shoulder - if you are driving an unfamiliar LDH car you need to check the blind spots more often.
