Question: "My friend and I keep having the same argument when we drive down I-5," writes Jace Krause of Seattle. "He tends to drive in the left lane, but doesn't go much faster than the speed limit. I tell him he's holding up traffic and that he should move right for faster drivers. He insists that as long as he's going the speed limit, he can drive in whatever lane he wants. Which one of us is right?"

Trooper Kelly Spangler says the rule is simple. "The left lane is a pbutting lane," she says. All vehicles should be in the right lanes unless they are pbutting.

For legal beagles, the applicable law is RCW 46.61.100. Subsection 4 says, "It is a traffic infraction to drive continuously in the left lane of a multilane roadway when it impedes the flow of other traffic."
