But your talk of "knowing" somebody has committed an offence, and the subsequent implications, mean that it cannot - either at the time, or later - be buttumed that this is absolute.

What if they then say something, that the police officer does deem worthy of using in evidence? What then? What's the harm in advising the accused of their rights when they are either being reported for an offence, or being charged?
Sure - I accept that there may be instances where regardless of what the accused says, the police officer will show no interest, or use as evidence, but I cannot see the extra burden of advising the accused of their rights - it's not like it's a long-winded progress.

Regardless of what you believe, they are legally innocent until proven guilty. The case against them shouldn't succeed, or fail solely on their testament. There could be other reasons why people remain silent that are entirely unconnected with what they have been charged with - your approach and standpoint is totally inflexible to that. If nothing else, what about (and I accept it could be quite a rarity) national security?
Such rights are being slowly eroded. You try and buttert your right to be legally innocent until proven guilty if you get a ticket from a GATSO - the opposite will happen, you will be buttumed to be guilty until unless you can actually prove otherwise.
