I always thought I was doing it correctly, I would cautiously move out across a red light, or get up on the pavement to let a 999 vehicle go pbutt. I have been extremely good over the years in buttisting them to get through in tight situations where the traffic had gone into paralysis. In fact I now learn I have been wrong all along. According to this BBC report, I am meant to sit there blocking the police car or the fire engine like everybody else. God help them on our local ring road. It's always blocked. Two narrow lanes and no where for the emergency vehicles to go unless people mount the kerb. Not any more. I've learnt the error of my ways.

Motorists in Devon and Cornwall are to get lessons on how to act when they see emergency vehicles in their mirrors. Police say some 999 calls responses are delayed by drivers who panic or do not get out of the way when they see blue flashing lights approaching. They are lecturing driving instructors, safety organisations and driving groups at the Force Driving School in Exeter. Police said tips included not braking quickly unless safe to do so, and not mounting kerbs. Traffic officers said motorists often forgot the simple rules of the road as they tried to get out of the way of a police car, ambulance or fire engine on an emergency call.
