What complete bollocks.
Every "average" family I know of peees their money away on expensive holidays, overblown weddings, bling, ready meals, alcohol, fags, designer labels for the children and depreciation on vehicles they really can't afford. Their problem is not lack of income it's lack of common sense and lack of fiscal restraint. They often have no money because they are knee-deep in debt on credit cards.
Those whom you envy, and let's be clear it is envy, make a huge contribution to society particularly in the form of taxes. That is an inevitable consequence of a tax system that requires the individual to pay a set proportion of their income in taxation.

Labout pulled this kind of stupid taxation policy in the 60s, with Healey claiming he would increase higher rate taxation "until the pips squeaked". Do you know what happened? The people he wanted to tax simply up and left the UK to live elsewhere, and the burden of taxation and out-of-control government spending fell on those remaining.
At least the Tories realised that you cannot have unfettered government spending, and that low taxation boosts the economy. The Tories tax take was actually higher than Labour's because by charging low taxes and making the system slightly fairer across the board (although the wealthy were still soaked paying 45% of their income in tax) resulted in people being more willing to stay in the UK and pay their taxes.
