There is plenty of space for roads, they actually take up very little. Much less than the new houses we manage to find room for anyway. In fact the hosung plots on both sudes of residential roads are usually several times deeper than the width of the road. Industrial and commecrcial buildings even more so.

Please remember when you look at a map that roads are not drawn to scale. If they were, they would be so thin you would find it difficult to see them.

I think if you compare the miles of carriageway per registerd vehicle , or the miles of carriageway per driver, or the miles of carriageway per head of population with just about any other European country, you will find that the UK is near the bottom of the list on all three criteria.
The fact that we routinely suffer traffic congestion is an indication that there is insufficient road space for the demand.
Needless to say our government prefers to turn a blind eye to this, since building roads costs money.
Don't forget that we are the fourth richest country in the world, yet our roads (and other public services for that matter) are worse than those of many other "poorer" countries. And that includes similarly overpopulated ones like the Netherlands.
