Martin Dixon I find it diffcult to reconcile that view with the situation you found yourself in. Surely your employers moved to where they didsimply because the existence of the road allowed...

I am one of those who has suffered from this. I used to work 2 miles from where I live, and always cycled to work. Then my company relocated 20 miles away in a place that has no viable public transport links to where I live, although both are close to the M1. So no real choice except to buy another car and drive, although I do car share with 2 others who were similarly affected.

If the M1 had never been built, perhaps the company could not have relocated and kept its staff.

But that being said, I think the above is a poor excuse for not providing an adequate transport infrastructure. New roads fill up with traffic primarily because they are needed. If a new road did not fill up, I would argue that it was built in the wrong place and the money was wasted.

They might have offered relocation packages instead to key staff. The move was brought about for cost saving reasons I am sure. The road would still have filled...

In transport as in all public services, we elect goverments to anticipate and make provision for the demand. If they don't do so, they have failed and deserve not to be re-elected.

So an opposition party saying that they will not honour their obligations to provide adequate public services (despite an intention to raise taxes) will not get my vote, I'm afraid.
