If you understood that, why not answer this way instead of making the instance that I was arguing 'induced' demand after I posted not one, but two corrections?

Light Rail Myths and Realities 4959
Yep. Wave propagation is often the phenomena you observe when the flow inexplicably slows and when you get to the source there's nothing there. There are...

In any case I am not talking about a single instance event like a collision or single bad driver or a rain storm. I am talking about the overwhelming numbers of drivers who don't even realize that there are other people on the road. They are always out there. They crawl through turns, they drive side by side. They drive slowly in the pbutting lane. They refuse to keep right, etc and so on. This reduces capacity more than an extra lane can compensate for. At best, at best, the extra lane allows a constant ability for other drivers to squeeze by and hold more vehicles in the system before tipping into bumper-to-bumper until it ends, where merge imparement causes slow downs and a traffic jam.

No. Because you called my arguement "induced demand" with a rude insistance when it wasn't. If you think I'm too stupid to understand, you should post something explaining it. Your instance was nothing more than an thinly veiled insult and here you admit as much. If you don't like the possible responses to it, you shouldn't have posted it. Here's how you score the knock out punch. Show off your brillance and invalidate what I said. Don't just declare it something else, or declare it wrong.

Where? You've declared it. You've called it something it's not and then invalidated that. I could say you argued that there was an alien city the size of LA on the light side of the moon and then I go invalidate that.

You haven't shown anything regarding my arguement. You argued against 'induced demand' and declared that's what I was arguing. I wasn't. My 'theory' is in the framework of constant demand with capacity increasing.

So what? I would expect that they wouldn't. I am looking at traffic very differently than most people in the USA. And anyway, what could the FHWA do but live with things the way they are? It's not in their power to correct it, but in the hands of the states.

Do you actually think rolling roadblocks don't have a negative effect on capacity? Do you think that following idiotic teachings like waiting two seconds after the car in front of you at a traffic light starts moving to start moving yourself increases or decreases the number of vehicles that make it through the intersection per green cycle?

What situation do you prefer? 3 ducklings side by side doing 10mph slower than the speed of traffic blocking all three travel lanes or these three drivers behind each other in the right lane? In which configuration does the road have greater capacity? My arguement is simple. Add a lane and a fourth duckling will be there to block it. He's there not because he decides to drive because there's a new lane, he's there, because he's been using that road all along, he's just been behind the other three ducklings. Now he has a clear lane all to his own and damn if he isn't going to excerise his right to use it.

Oh, now you are going to discuss again. Of course not, it's no longer free flow when the lanes are blocked. That's the point...

There's always another duckling when the road is so well used. And because of that, extra lanes will always be limited in their benefit. To get the most out of it, there has to be displined drivers. Otherwise it's sub optimal performance.

Let me put it this way, you have clogged garden hose because some insects built a home in it. What is your solution: buy a bigger diameter hose or unclog it and spray some bug person around where you keep your hose? What is the expected outcome of each?

Light Rail Myths and Realities 4956
Robert Cote It can. Let's buttume that a given road has an unlimited number of free lanes. Then the...

You decided to go this route, then complain about it. typical.

In My Experience. How long have you been posting to usenet? You're going off the deep end again twisting and strawmaning and trying desperately to attack me personally. What do you have against Keep Right...
