Light Rail Myths and Realities 4962The entire statement: Poor lane discipline cannot impede free flow conditions by definition. Poor lane discipline is irrelevant to capacity because it isn't possible to measure in near capacity conditions. Likewise it is a circular...
Light Rail Myths and Realities 4963Again, he asked for MY estimate. I gave it. Now you people want to call it a "measurement" and a "scientific estimate" which is neither what...

A "live stop?"
I, too, have noticed a distinct raising of the threshold for what traffic reporters consider to be problems. I chalk it up to the fact that freeways in LA are *so* congested that they could spend all of the time between commercial breaks giving traffic reports if they reported every place where traffic was less than optimal free-flowing (or, as we say in SoCal, "full freeways speeds" meaning 85-90 MPH). So in order to make the traffic reports for the entire 5 county LA metropolitan area fit into a 1-minute traffic report, they leave out a LOT of stuff. And even then, they still don't get to everything during EVERY report. KNX, for example, will alternate between the northern part of the Southland and the southern part on alternating reports. If you listen to just one report and then tune away, you're missing at least half of the info. I've learned to listen through at least 3 reports, and only tune away when I've heard the same incidents repeated.
San Diego county, though much smaller than the LA area, also does this (at least KOGO does). Thus, I wouldn't be surprised if WLS were to split its traffic info among multiple reports, as well.
I am also used to driving through an area that the KNX-KOGO traffic reporters claim has an accident or congestion and finding nothing but full freeway speeds. Things happen so quickly that the news center just can't keep up.
Bottom line, radio traffic reports - he one reason many people tune away from FM or satellite radio and tune in an AM station - is become essentially worthless in major metropolitan areas.
It's easy enough to get. If I had the source code to my nav system, I could integrate real-time traffic data right now. Or, if I wanted to install either a second LCD monitor or some sort of voice output system, I could use the Car PC I built to track my teenaged son's activities while he was borrowing my car. ;)
Alternatively, if you want to wait a bit, I'm sure you'll be able to soon.

Light Rail Myths and Realities 4965Again we are in agreement. I have no doubt you think you are far more intelligent than I. I do disagree however, it is not impolite for you...
