Conditions vary. Tell me, why should we keep adding lanes and not address driver training? How many years does it take to...

I'm too tired of this thread to dig out it.

It was never mentioned as happening. that's been your aside. Once it's stop and go, it's TOO LATE. I am talking ROOT CAUSE.

Not what I wrote. I wrote, that without LANE DISPLINE, when there are TOO MANY DRIVERS (ie rush hours, peak travel periods, etc) that an extra lane doesn't do much good because another driver will move in to block it too.

This would be considerably easier if you didn't continually try to change my arguements.

They increase the size of the parking lot. They do not reduce congestion in that case. The number of vehicles remains equal, the jam gets wider and shorter.

The problem is that the road tips over to bumper to bumper. That's what I wish to prevent. Your extra lane doesn't help that nearly as much as lane displine would. Best is extra lane AND lane displine. But without lane displine, your extra lane is quickly neturalized as the clumps still form, still grow into each other, still cause problems for people merging on, still trap people on the opposite side away from their exits. The cross over movements still cause a sea of brake lamps and slower speeds until its a bumper to bumper 5mph crawl. If lane displine exists, faster traffic gets by, the clumps don't form, and the road doesn't tip.

Extra lanes try to keep clumps from forming by offering another way around the blockage. But the blockage can grow when traffic volume is large enough to neutralize that benefit. I wish to get rid of what starts the clump, the seed that grows to becomes bumper-to-bumper crawls. Why are you so opposed to that?
