I owned two - neither was cussed at. Both were great cars, reliable, comfortable, decent fuel economy, lots of room. There were way ahead of the Toyota Crap I owned during the same time period. Three family members also owned Tari, none cussing from any of them either.

The Sable and Taurus were introduced as 1986 models (available in late 1985). They were not even close to the being the first mbutt market vehicles to use transverse front wheel drive - full size or not. GM had introduced model of similar size and larger years before. Chrysler K-cars were only a little samller and had been out for 4 years.

The truth is that Pinto fuel tanks were not especially dangerous for the era. The whole Pinto "fire plant" thing is a media trial lawyer driven exaggeration. The driver rest rate for Toyota Corrolla from that era was substanially higher than it was for Pintos. How come no one ever rants about dangerous Toyotas?
