Having driven through these roadworks for the last couple of days, I've noticed they're using the SPECS average speed check system to enforce the speed limit, which has a camera pointing at each lane at the entry and exit to the roadworks, and there also appear to be cameras halfway through. Everyone seems to stick rigidly to 40, so obviously the deterrent effect works and people can no longer happily blast along and panic brake for the cameras.

But isn't there a bit of an obvious flaw with this system? That being, if you simply manage to "hide" your car behind one of the numerous lorries that are in lanes 1 and 2 as you are pbutting the first-second set of cameras, you can't be caught as your entry time was never recorded and therefore the system will never know your average speed? AIUI the system uses ANPR to record your number plate on entry and exit and then calculates your speed using the time and distance between your entry and exit, based on your number plate. There were certainly plenty of lorries there today and it wouldn't have been too difficult to time it so the cameras couldn't have seen you. Can anyone see why this wouldn't work?
