M25 variable speed question

Cycling to work 79

Hi all,

I have recently had the misfortune to be required to drive regularly over that section of the M25 with variable speed limits.

Up to today no problem. I've hit the area during peak hours or mid morning and most traffic seems to adhere to the limits and so did I.

Today I hit the affected section at around 0530 running anti-clockwise with very little traffic on the road.

I pbutt a gantry indicating 40, then then nothing - for several miles there is no indication on any gantry, all are blank. Most traffic is ignoring it and traffic filtering in is obviously running at or over the NSL. Then I pbutt a gantry showing 60 - again following gantries for several miles are blank until I reach the end of the variable section. Again the restriction seems to be largely ignored.

The question I ask is simple - where does the variable speed limit end? At a blank gantry or one displaying a de-restricted sign? Should I have stuck to 40mph for about twenty miles while other traffic was flying by me at 80 and 90 mph?

Help please....

Vince
