Mini roundabouts 336

I have just checked the wording in the 1993 version of the Highway Code (paragraph 124), it says about roundabouts, 'when going straight ahead approach in the left-hand or centre lane on a three-lane road (on a two-lane road you may approach in the right-hand lane if the left-hand lane is blocked)'.

The 1978 version of the Highway Code was similar except it had a separate paragraph for multi approach roundabouts (para 112) which said, 'when there are more than two lanes at the entrance to a roundabout, unless signs or road markings indicate otherwise, use the clearest convenient lane on the approach and through the roundabout suitable for the exit you intend to take'.

Don't forget that those drivers who are unfamiliar with that roundabout will not know until it is too late that there are only 2 lanes around the roundabout and three on the approach. They may also be applying rules from earlier versions of the Highway Code which are not included in the current version. The current version has nothing to say about multi approach roundabouts whereas earlier versions did as shown above.
