I did try some IAM training a while ago, but gave it up because I found their training system unhelpful, as it was making my driving far worse. Harry has hit the nail on the head with his walking up the stairs scenario. The IAM system would work well if you were programming a computer to drive, but the human brain with its neural networks does not work in a sequential manner. Our minds are already working very well automatically. I accept we all have bad habits and we all have much we can improve. But we can unlearn any specific bad automatic habits and learn some new good skills, without having to try to unlearn everything we know. Any pychologist would tell you that you that it is good practice to use as much of the existing good skills as possible and change one or two bad habits at a time. Trying to change how we think is virtually impossible and is actually dangerous because it makes our driving far worse. The IAM's approach seems to be to throw the baby out with the bath water. One of IAM instructors I went out with admitted that the IAM tended to act a bit like a religious cult. He was an ex clbutt 1 police driver and instructor. He first attended an IAM driving buttessed him, they gave his "clbutt 1 police driving style" a 3 out of 10 score !!! Its just that the IAM are very dogmatic and could not beleive that any "normal" person could possibly be driving well. Apparently the IAM were a little embarrbutted when they found out who he was!!!
Underuse of brakes 5461like they were saying : In many cases, that makes perfect sense to me, too. However, it seems to me that Mark's suggesting doing that in ALL cases - so, f'r instance - single carriageway...
I think if the IAM moderised some of their training methods, they could really do a first clbutt job. As it stands, if you get a few tips of one of the less dogmatic buttessors and don't take their over-arching system too seriously, then you can learn a lot of good tips and improve your driving.
