My car is diesel, and I pay about 2.25-2.40 per gallon for No #2 diesel, I fill up...

buying would would

I thought the small SUVs were quite fuel efficent. Don't they get 20-25 MPG highway? That doesn't seem too bad at all. Hell, the new Escape gets 20-25 MPG with the V6 and 24-29 with the 4 banger. The Explorer gets 15-20 with the V8 and 16-21 with hte V6. That's not very impressive. I believe more fuel MPG could be had with a proper tune for mileage. Of course the tree huggers won't let us do that. Instead new cars have timing retarded below where they will get peak fuel efficiency, in the name of emissions. Well gee whiz, lets trade some NOx for particulates and HC, and burn more fuel while we're at it! In any case, if a 38 year old full-size Ford with a bigger engine and without an overdrive transmission can get the same mileage or better than a brand new SUV that's kinda sad. Gee, we've come a long way in 4 decades, huh? It's a shame we have no more full-size cars to compare to. Yeah, CAFE end off station wagons and full-size cars. That's why we have all the SUVs on the road.

Now that is some scary talk you have there, saying we need to push people to do things, or force them into something other than what they want.

What about people who need a pickup or SUV? They now have to spend a fortune on a ludicrously large and heavy vehicle that gets absolutely terrible mileage. That seems counter-productive.
