Mike T. Apparently, you misunderstand modern racing. If available technology is given free rein, the inevitable result would be carnage. No one *wants* to die out there. The...

NASCAR just plain sucks anymore. It hasn't been good since the early '70s, when there was actually racing involved. Anymore NASCAR is about image and making "movie stars" out of drivers. It's no longer a compebreastion of who can make the best engine and build the best combination adn have it last several hundred grueling miles of being beaten on in the hands of a good driver. No more are the days of Ford's powerful engines and the mighty Mopar opposition. No longer is there any great leaps in engine technology on the track. No more hemi's from either company, no more cammers. Hell, they don't even race real cars anymore. It's ridiculous. Back in the day the cars on the track weren't all that different from the cars on the street. It was win a race on Sunday and get some sales on Monday. The '63.5 427 Galaxies were basically the same car you bought off the showroom floor, with the same engine you could buy off the shoroom floor.

Safety? Well if you're not willing to take the risk then don't race cars. Seems pretty simple to me. Race long enough and you will be involved in an accident on the track. Take it or leave it. Hell, back then drivers had a roll bar, a lap belt, and a helmet. Many drivers didn't wear the lap belt as they didn't want to be stuck in a burning car should they get into a wreck. They even used to allow convertibles! NASCAR used to be an awesome thing, but ever since the mid-70's when the cars were no longer production chbuttis and engines with only minor modifications. Now look what happens when someone builds a more powerful engine within the rules (Ford), they put restrictor plates on the engine or require extra weight in the car. Well NASCAR just plain sucks. The spirit of racing is dead and it's all about 'race car heroes' who are nothing but media figures.

I enjoy going to the small races up in New England. My favorite oval track is Oxford Plains Speedway. Nice backwoods track that isn't real big. I like the Outlaw and Strictly Stock clbuttes as they are basically cars off the street, with some modifications for oval track racing. None of that BS NASCAR type stuff. Well I don't think we'll ever again see real oval track racing on a large scale. That's not what the mbuttes want... People want race car heroes
