I think there has to be a component of layout geometry involved that makes some junctions a lot more dangerous than others for the average driver. I would hazard a guess that they look at but do not see the vehicle that is about to hit them as they move out. Otherwise I cannot understand how they would make this all too common mistake.

I have wondered if there is some hypnotic effect when vehicles are approaching from the vanishing point. On the Black Swan some of the worst accidents have been on the side where the junction looks safer.

Yes they are and that is precisely the point... which you are quite spectacularly failing to grasp. No, they don't. There is bad driving...

White line overrun by comparison is easier to understand if someone is not well coordinated and-or the road has a gradient.

The point I am trying to make and clearly failing is that there is not much opportunity for the poor saps to learn how to make this particular right turn manoeuvre correctly when the consequences of a mistake are so severe. Or do you think dying is insufficient penalty?

I think the press reports should include the details of the vehicle movements leading up the collision as well as the usual emotive stuff. The problem is that "bereaved family calls for person junction to be closed" makes a far better headline in the local rag that the rationalist "COBA shows existing junction is cost effective".

The public never gets to see the accident analysis which is a pity. It is very hard to argue the rational case against emotive arguments.

I don't think they do it all the time. A lot of people make ill judged lane changes and they mostly get away with it. But an amazing number of people making right turns onto fast roads are relying on the mainline traffic to take evasive action to stay alive.

Dangerous road or junction is the phrase that the coroner tends to use when reporting yet another bane incident at the same location. Accident black spot is another, and I think they should be marked - mainline traffic has a right to know that the junction ahead is unusually hazardous.

Costs about £250k to close a gap in a D2AP trunk road. So that much cash should cover a fairly large number like a dozen or so SC junctions.

Not so. I see people accepting responsibility for their actions as important. Not necessarily the endpoint but very important. As I said, it not about apportioning blame. It's...
