NY to CA 2776

OK. This means that you will need to average about 1000 km per day.

Look up "Mich's tips" in another thread on MTR about 18 months ago.

But here are a couple of exerpts:

1) Don't stop for the night in the near (that would be north or east for you) side of major metro areas get to the far (that's west or south for you) before stoping.

2) In areas where you are familiar or where scenary is minimal, get a couple of hours under your belt before sunrise. Your well rested eyes adjust much more easily to gradually increasing sunlight than your tired eyes do to darkness. You can get in 10-12 hours driving in by midafternoon this way, perhaps see a few sights and hit the sack just after an early dinner. Bedtime 7:00 PM. Wake up call 2:30 AM.

3) Out west, distances will go a lot faster than you might expect, but there is a lot of it.

4) Keep plenty to drink and make stops every 90 minutes to 2 hours. Try to time your comfort stops and your vehicle's fuel consumption so that they happen at the same time. I have a vehicle that goes three bladders on a tank of gas. It works incredibly well.

5) You didn't say where in NY you are starting, but MapsOnUs's fastest route sends your through Oklahoma City thenon I-40 in about 41:30 and my route on I-80 though Salt Lake then I-15 is about 30 minutes longer. I suspect that you may be able to make better time on I-80 and I-15 than MapsOnUs thinks. I'm not as sure about I-40 east of Texas.

It looks like Chicago or Detroit (either could be a long haul from upstate), Omaha, Cheyenne, Salt Lake, Las Vegas, and then San Diego for stops. I know people who have done Salt Lake to San Diego in one day, but they weren't exactly fresh the next day.
