Definitely. All they did was to plug in the service system and when it reported no faults to believe what it told them.

The Mercedes problems mentioned lower down and the BMW problems are much more significant. BMWs problems are related to their f***witted decision to use Windows, Mercedes problem I'm not sure about but a friend of mine did have direct experience of a software failure.

He's a high-price fancy lawyer and was travelling down the autostrada in Italy at around 220 kph when all the electronics on his Merc died. Everything, engine management, displays, the lot. When the engine died, so did the power steering and brakes.

He was able to wrestle the car over to the hard shoulder and to slow, although both brakes and steering now required superhuman strength to do anything. Also he was without lights or indicators making the trip from lane 2 to hard shoulder "amusing".

He called his Mercedes dealers who referred on to Mercedes who told him to "reboot" the car by turning the ignition switch in a particular pattern. After doing this the car worked again. He sold the car.
