Nearly made me late for court. 779The only comment I can make on this whole affair is **** happens. I live in Cornwall as well, and I fully understand the problems that Bridge has caused, and certainly...
Nearly made me late for court. 781You may not need this line, though I note from another ng that your attendance in court was on a charge of a motoring offence, so if at any time...
Compare the car par reciepts with the train tickets sold, that tells a different story.
There they have a real train set with joined up lines and generally a good service, run by one company, Nederland Spoorweg not a bunch of companies formed by spivs out to make a buck. The Thalys and ICE cooperations are brilliant, I use them a lot.
I was sitting in the train from Ams. to Den Haag the other day and it was 5 minutes late leaving, there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth from the punters, nobody would raise an eyebrow in the UK they would consider it fairly normal
I'm not actually against railways, Just one unproductive subsidised branchline and only because of the obstructive bridge on it's route. If it wasn't for that AFAIC you anoraks can play trains and continue to delude yourselves as to their usefulness and viability until the cows come home, I'm not a direct UK taxpayer so it's not my money you are squandering.
The major fault with the mess you call trains is the price, it's far too expensive for what you get and there is a baffeling pelethora of different fares for the same journey. For example SWMBO and I were quoted 660 pounds UK for a first clbutt return from Penzance to Paddington and by the same company on the same day a discounted return of 20 pounds, with the option to upgrade to first clbutt for another fiver each. Various different fares in between all called different names like economy extra budget etc.
The train departs and arrives at the same time regardless of how much your ticket cost so why don't you price the seats realistically then more punters would come your way.
Whilst I'm in moad mode, when I book on Thalys or Eurostar I am required to book a seat wheres in the UK it seems I am only buying the right to stand in a moveing carriage which may or may not arrive where I've paid to go, seats are a bonus, that smacks of the same system as they have in India, will we have commuters clinging to the outside of busy feeder line trains? (probably not H and S would not allow it, I'm surprised they don't insist you ride in an approved seat on the train with a seat belt).
