Dave,
I'm not suggesting that a peugeot car will not be brilliant, but the chances of it being brilliant are, well, much slimmer than a better-constructed thought-out alternative brand. I am aware that peugeot throw in some crappy electrics to make people think they are getting a better car for the same money as another poorer spec'd brand of car at a similar price.

It's all about where you go - avoid arnold clark like the plague; have you heard of 'motorpoint'? A friend purchased one with under 3k miles, 54 plate, 7k exactly. It did of course start at 10.5k, but if you actually know what you're talking about and what to spot at a reputable car dealer then you're onto a winner.

If you aren't willing to take a week to shop about, a car auction can always be a good place for an absolutely amazing bargain, but again you really must be clued up, and do your research.
Personally I will take the person that bought the Mondeo to help me buy a car, as he somehow gets them down in price dramatically with his vast amounts of knowledge of just about every vehicle, and prices.
