No more speed cameras, says top cop Approved: wibble 5224

On Tue, 15 Mar 2005 19:28:02 +0000, Bob Johnstone was popularly supposed to have said:

In that case you must be incredibly stupid, for several reasons.

Firstly, precisely how do you hide a camera? These things are great bulky devices; hard to hide and when you do hide them, you still have the problem of people locating them.

Secondly, have you considered how the current Notice of Intended Prosecution works? You get sent a bit of paper that basically says "Confess to doing this or tell us who dunnit or we'll do you".

Only it doesn't, it says "Do your best to tell us who dunnit".

I was listening to BBC Southern Counties Radio this afternoon (no, that's not why I need help :-). In...

So, a hidden speed camera. Very bloody good; it is hidden so you don't know where it is. So you presumably don't know you've been nicked by it. With no conspicuous memory of being caught, how are you to remember who was driving at the time? Could've been you, could've been your mate Fred, could've been Joe who looks like a dead ringer for you; you can't remember.

Which puts the CPS in a pickle. If they prosecute you, then you've got the "So prove I did it beyond reasonable doubt" defence. If they try the extra punishment for non-cooperation, you take it to the European Courts as being illegal, and get the whole poxy horrible law thrown out.

Dan Holdsworth May I clarify: Speed cameras can easily be made invisible to approaching vehicles, although (obviously) not completely...

Most cases like this, the CPS walks away muttering vile imprecations but doing little else.

Finally, do you honestly think that speed cameras work? Do you? With the silliness of many speed limits, the widespread and flagrant disregard for such petty bureaucratic stupidities and the almost complete lack of traffic cops, speeding is rife.

Most of the time, speeding is harmless. Speed rarely causes accidents, in fact. Stupidity causes far, far more.
