Because there's been some rather extreme views stated by others which I have no desire to be lumped in with, and I do not feel that I...

Oh, yes. Both. Drove a 320 to Luxembourg and back several times. Vile thing. And the pool car somewhere or other I worked was a Mk.4 Cortina. There was no functional difference between them. Appliances, pure and simple.

It was an unpleasant but not especially vicious street attack from what I've read. The race card seems to trump common sense and makes people come out with all...

I'm afraid it does. OK, they're better built, but "ultimate driving machines"? Excuse me while I pee myself laughing. the "1" is a piece of over-priced crap for people so desperate for that blue and white badge that they'd buy a turd providing it had one. And what are BMW diesels all about, then? The "ultimate clattering round in a big cloud of blue smoke experience"? Then we come to such joys as the 318. That isn't even a 1.8. Someone who worked for me owned one briefly, but said that being unable to catch up with moving traffic to join the motorway because it was so slow made it a pain.

Yes, BMW make (or rather, made) some good cars, the M series are pretty nice, but the vast majority of their current output are repmobiles, pure and simple. They've managed a marketing triumph; to make something ordinary and everyday look special in the eyes of the consumers. TG says that the 3 series outsells the Mondeo. And I believe them.

Excuse me?! You might want to reconsider that statement. With respect you're drifting away from the point. I'll try again- are you claiming that religious police do not enforce the Burkha in some regions...

And they've pretty much totally lost their way looks-wise. The new 6 series looks like a shrunken Ssong-Yang Musso. What a pity - the 6 and 8 used to be such pretty cars, now they make you want to heave.
