And what are BMW diesels all about, then? The "ultimate clattering round in a big cloud of blue smoke experience"? Then we come to such joys as the 318. That isn't even a 1.8. Someone who worked for me owned one briefly, but said that being unable to catch up with moving traffic to join the motorway because it was so slow made it a pain.
Yes, BMW make (or rather, made) some good cars, the M series are pretty nice, but the vast majority of their current output are repmobiles, pure and simple. They've managed a marketing triumph; to make something ordinary and everyday look special in the eyes of the consumers. TG says that the 3 series outsells the Mondeo. And I believe them.
