Excuse me?! You might want to reconsider that statement.
With respect you're drifting away from the point. I'll try again- are you claiming that religious police do not enforce the Burkha in some regions?
Why would I condemn a mask wearer when AFAICS I have not condemned Burkha wearers? I think perhaps you may want to make this point with these other posters you mention, not me. I cannot be held responsible for the views of McKev or anyone else, and TBH I'm rather taken aback that you think anything I have posted in any way endorses anything McKev has said.
I simply illustrated reasons why I think many members of the public dislike the Burkha. Wearing a protective mask is hardly the same as wearing what is to many people a symbol of isolation and seperation from the rest of the general public. I'm not saying the latter is right or even defensible as a logical argument, only that it is what many people feel.
O.T. Veil 732Because there's been some rather extreme views stated by others which I have no desire to be lumped in with, and I do not feel that I have said anything...
I don't want to be drawn into defending or criticising cultural customs, but to answer your point and your rather dodgy analogy- the protective face mask is not a religious or cultural item, and it is often worn by cyclists amongst other people in London and other major cities for obvious reasons. I don't suppose for one minute they wear them in meetings etc, do you?
I also can't think of any countries in the world which have religious police enforcing the wearing of said masks, they are entirely voluntary (and not gender, religion or race-specific) and have obvious health benefits in polluted cities. They also do not over anything like as much of the face as a Burkha, and none of the head-hair. No-one is *expected* or worse still *forced* to wear them by their peers for, amongst other reasons, the purpose of distinguishing their idenbreasty and culture. I would also expect (and hope) that Jack Straw, who is blamed with kicking the whole Burkha affair off, would ask a cyclist to remove his mask, or a motorcyclist to remove his helmet while in his office if they hadn't already done so, which is unlikely IMO.
