I take a fairly moderate stance on multiculturalism and the display of M.E culture in this country, and I certainly do not wish to be thought of as racist or bigoted. I have reservations about veils TBH, and I understand those who feel threatened or uncomfortable with them, but I also understand and wholeheartedly support the individual's right to freedom of expression. It is a dilemma, and I admit I have no answers to it.

So you did, but my point was that Straw wasn't intentionally making a religious or cultural point, despite the media and public making it primarily about Islam. He said veils, but I I'm certain he'd have the same atbreastude if it were crash helmets, face masks or even gas masks and welder's masks :-) Obviously the only time he encounters face coverings in his office is the Burkha, and unfortunately it has led to this media storm.
