OT: Going To Movies

Dan J.S.

This is interesting. I always go to movies as much as possilble because I like the environment, and out of habit, since I've been doing it for my whole life, and I'm 58 now.

Stuff I like:

Big screen - fills my entire vision - much scarier to get scared by a shark that's 15 - 20 feet high than something on a TV screen.

Big sound - the large and multiple speakers make for more of an "immersion" experience. Plus, you get yelled at by multiple sources for creating sound with the dynamic range you get in the theater. In the theater, you can get the leaves rustling and hear that just fine, then hear the gunshots at actual gunshot sound levels, which would disturb everyone else in the house if you tried it at home, or the next apartment if you live in an apartment complex.

Getting out of the house - I just like to be "away" - home is where you

Movie popcorn - just generally can't be beat.

Earliest opportunity - to see the new releases. I hate seeing a movie that most everyone I talk to saw 6 months ago.

People blabbing - I swear, unless you're completely alone at home, anyone else there thinks its great to start blabbing about whatever, and yeah, they talk on the phone in the same room, too.

Outside noises - come in and distract (such as barking dogs, neighbors shooting (its almost deer season - they're sighting in rifles, unless its the guy next door dropping some coyote or stray dog that's after his chickens), etc. etc. Then there's just the barking dogs, etc. I don't have the sort of sound insulation that the theaters have, nor the "quieter" setting.

So, yeah, I like the experience - and as for "pause", I can't imagine really getting into a movie, and then getting it interrrupted in some way that I had to pause it. I go to the theater and see it beginning to end in one sitting, no interruptions, etc.

As for cell phones, I rarely have a problem with 'em - the most annoying thing is that people open 'em up and the light from the screen can be distracting. I keep mine on buzzer, and sit near the exit - if it rings, I'll be far enough up the aisle that I can open it and tell people to "standby" and then talk to 'em out in the lobby, or simply punch the "ignore" button and let it go to voicemail - depends on who's calling.
