Beach goers spurn safety advice
Beach lifeguards have warned families not to dig deep holes in the sand in the wake of the rest of three-year-old Abbie Livingstone-Nurse.
She suffocated when a four to five foot deep pit collapsed and buried her at Upton Towans Beach in Cornwall.
This weekend, with the beaches expected to be packed with thousands of families, lifeguards will be handing out advice about digging holes.
However, some parents have been giving the lifeguards a frosty reception.
Phil Drew, beach manager for Penwith district council, which provides lifeguards for the beach where the tragedy happened, said: "Up to now most adults tell lifeguards to get lost."
He said when a female lifeguard spoke to two adults about the dangers of digging a deep hole they swore at her
"People think it cannot happen to me, and it is far too late when it does," Mr Drew said.
"We are still sending out the same safety message - there is not much more we can do."
A RNLI spokesman said that in the wake of the tragedy, lifeguards, who had always mingled with beachgoers to give safety advice, would be taking more notice of holes being dug in the beach.
RNLI national beach safety manager Steve Wills said that ahead of the school holidays they had sent lifeguards into Midlands schools to educate youngsters in beach safety.
"A large proportion of casualties come from that area," he said.
