"Press releases" are different from "news." Press releases are put out by organizations, with information they want to get out ot the press - in other words, propaganda or p.r.
Which has nothing to do with whether these costs are legitimate or frivolous. It could mean there's alot of frivolous lawsuits, or it could mean drug companies and other corporate defendants are just that bad that they put such a huge drain on the economy.
If it's involved in litigation, it is because some people claim to hav been injured by it. If alot of people are being injured by a drug, shouldn't a doctor consider this in deciding whether or not the drug truly is "appropriate"?
Why does this affect anyone but the plaintiffs themselves? Why should anyone else care about the client-lawyer contract? Although, if the lawyer gets paid hourly, without regard to the merits or viability of the case, then we'd have two results. 1) Alot of people wouldn't be able to afford lawyers, which means they'd have no remedy for injuries. 2) Lawyers would take frivolous cases and file more of them. It wouldn't matter to them if they won or not, since they'd get paid anyway.
Well then those 6,000 lawsuits should be dismissed with about 10 minutes of work by the defense lawyers, and the plaintiff's lawyers will be severely sanctioned. It's taught to every first-year law student that you have to suffer an injury in order to sue someone for a tort.
What exactly do you think these are examples of? Not one of these is a frivolous lawsuit. How about citing court cases or news stories about court cases that were dismissed and found to have no merit whatsoever?
