Going along a straight wide NSL "B" road in the sunshine at about 9 a.m. Frost on the verges (had to scrape the ice of the car windows before leaving home). Thought "Hmm, the road's icy, hasn't been salted..". Up ahead a sweeping LH bend, OK at the limit in good conditions. Saw blue lights, someone'd done themselves by driving into a tree, by the look, ambulance & police car there. I slowed down well before I got there, by throttling off and patting the brake pedal to signal. Very slippery surface. Suddenly, I see out of the nearside window that there's a bloke trying to *overtake on the inside*, speeding along the bumpy wide grbutt verge. Well!!! Whatever next!! I give him a *look* as he slows, and continue on my way. After a minute, I turn back to go and stand 1-3 mile back along the icy stretch, before the crash, to give "thumbs down" and "slow" signals as best as possible to approaching traffic. A cement mixer slowed right down. buttorted cars slow down and negotiate the icy bit. About 20% go past with their mouths open paying no attention. Looking along the icy stretch I see their brake lights light up, as they see the crash, and some snaking about as the ones that didn't slow realise, too late for comfort. The road and verges are now covered in skid marks.
