You don't mention the width of the road. NSL60 roads vary from those just wide enough for one car to move in one direction to ones which could be wide enough for a dual carriageway. If the road you were overtaking on was the same width as the one I live next to, about 14 feet, I would suggest that safe overtaking is not possible however good your view up the road. If the lead car was driving any where except to the left hand edge of the road and you overtook not against the right edge of the road, the gap between the vehicles would be less than 18 inches. Given that the average width of a car across the mirrors is about 6ft 6ins. Whilst technically possible, it could come as a surprise to the lead driver if he suddenly found a car alongside him, and only a few inches, away, as he was doing 60 mph down a country road.
Is it any wonder that a lowering of the speed limit to 40mph on country roads is being considered. I suggest you treat country roads with more caution in future. More bane accidents occur on rural roads than any where else (54.5% in 2004).
