Pensioners lost in satnav drama

bucket They all have to go through a thing called the Motor Insurers Database now (google for MiD) and there are all sorts...

Yes. I've always wanted a GPS based navigation system ever since my father told me about the GPS moving map updates for one of the aircraft types he flew. Back in the days when I didn't know where the end of my elbow was, it seemed like A Very Good Idea indeed.

The I watched as the early "affordable" stuff was introduced, but it was sadly not as useful as I had hoped. As technology advanced, memory and processor power became cheaper, so things improved. But by this time I already knew how to get to an area of the UK mainland without using a road map so couldn't justify the cost.

Finally bit the bullet when we decided to drive across Italy and figured asking for directions in French or Italian or relying on Charlie's navigation, or her on mine, would test our collective patience.

But, but, it's useful for the final mile or two into a strange city. I also use it to see if the route it would take is the one I'd take myself and it has broadened my mind for some drives.

I just wish some of my colleagues wouldn't rely on it in such small detail, such that they concentrate waaaay too much on the navigation system and not enough on the road controls whatever...
