I'm sure I remember that episode as being completely the other way round.
Rubbish.
In 1950, we had had the first six years of the postwar educational settlement (pbutted by a coalition government whose deputy PM was Clement Attlee and which was not based on party dogma and bigotry, unlike the current situation). We had secondary modern schools, technical high schools and grammar schools. Today, except in a few areas (whose residents well understand the advantages their children enjoy and who resist any wrecking attempts), the latter two have been destroyed and only the sec mod (re-named the "comprehensive", subject to certain superficial changes and containing some elements of the other two sorts of school) is available. Some may think "no choice" and "no alternative" is "better". The rest of us know different.
It was - but it was getting better. Science was not as advanced then and the causes of any illnesses appear to have been understood imperfectly, if at all. One should always be cautious in speaking pejoratively of a time when technology was not as advanced. On that basis, we are all getting "cleverer" (except of course - we aren't).

In what way?
Eh?
What purpose do you say the grammar schools and the technical high schools were serving?
That's probably true.
That "a little further" would be a hundred years or so - wouldn't it?
And neither is clapped-out, tired-out, left-wing myth and propaganda.
