Were it just my preference, then I'd agree with you. But I expect if you were to "put it to the vote" with the people on the street being polluted by the guy in the car, you'd find that most people think that it is too loud and gets on their nerves.
One of the most important things in driving is to be considerate to other road users - at least if my driving instructor was to be believed - why does that not extend to playing music?
FWIW, it isn't just people in cars. On Friday last week I noticed someone walking around the streets in the town centre with a ghettoblaster on their shoulders blaring out some horrible drum'n'bbutt track. Again, everyone was looking at him like he was an idiot.
But it seems to be far more prevalent with car drivers, and given that they have a responsibility to be considerate to other people I don't think that points on a licence would be a bad thing to introduce.

True, everything is subjective. But to me (and I suspect a lot of people) not being able to hear the person speaking next to me because of some idiot parked up playing his "hip hop beats" is a sure sign that it is not being played at a sensible volume.
