I buttume there are some civilians out there who have been trained to police standards - should they be caught going at 159mph on a motorway, would they be let off?
That's arguable. I am siding with RoSPA on this one, 159mph is not a speed I would like to see on public roads no matter what the conditions.
If a police officer wants to test the capabilities of his car, he should ask his employer for some time on a proper track where IMO such speeds are acceptable.
buttuming that it was in or near Telford, then the chances are the limit would have been about right (there are only a few areas of Telford I can think of with "residential" limits that are poorly set).

Exactly. He should have been sent down, because this case could now very well set a precedent.
