Moron. You're unable to see the difference between the cost of oil and taxes placed on gasoline. The taxes are intended to discourage gasoline useage and fund public transportation as the alternative. As most european countries did not have oil exploration and refining companies as major economic players, their goverments were not bribed into defunding public transportation and the automobile was left to be, in the main, a wealthy person's playtoy.

Part of the need for public transportation was the devastation caused by WWII. Governments didn't want money flowing out of their countries to the US to buy cars, they wanted the money saved and invested in infrastructure. It wasn't until the late part of the 20th century that average europerans were finally wealthy enough to consider owning an automobile

Furthermore, your contemptuous references to the price of oil is also stupid. Do you imagine that if oil cost $60-barrel in the 1950s, the US would have been an economic leader? Not a chance. The cost of energy is the first determinate of economic growth.

The US has a population of approximately 300 million. The cost of gasoline plus the cost of natural gas and heating oil will start a depression this winter as consumer spending is limited to energy (heating) and food. You do the math.
